Rúben Damásio graduated in Fashion Design from MODATEX in 2013. In March 2014, he presented at Sangue Novo as a part of the design duo 2ID. Now, he will be presenting the first collection of his namesake brand.

What was the starting point of this collection?
This collection is called “Mist” because it is inspired precisely in that natural phenomenon. It is quite common in some regions in Portugal, in particular in Serra da Estrela.

How did you translate that concept into the collection?
The starting point of this collection, the mist, defined the color scheme of the collection. My goal was to translate the idea of fog and the mystery associated with this phenomenon, which blurs our vision. That’s something I also took into consideration when selecting the materials.
Besides, one of my goals was to design a commercial collectio, yet paying a lot of attention to the details. For example, I used orange in many garments of this collection, but never as a main color. It is mostly seen in the details.

How does this collection reflect your aesthetics?
I want to be a designer with a commercial approach. Of course I want to pay attention to details and create something different, but I want to design clothes with a certain kind of client in mind – people who are looking for garments with details, that are comfortable and that are high-quality.
In this collection, I used many natural raw materials, such as cotton and wool, which I tend do consider more and more for my collections.

Is there anything in this collection that stands out?
This is the collection where I actually start to define who I am as a designer. All of our collections reflect who we are and our aesthetics, but I feel this is the one that best defines me as a designer, because of that marketability. I really want people to wear my clothes and to feel well when they do. So, that’s what stands out – the practicality and the fact that I am now defining a “Rúben Damásio” aesthetics.

How do you feel about the show?
That’s a tough question because the runway show is always a surprise… I think people always want to do better when they are involved in any project… The show will be the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new one. It’s the moment when we present our work and we can get the feedback that will allow us to improve and grow.

ModaLisboa | Sangue Novo: 2ID

SS: Depende.

Rúben Damásio and Sara Seidi met while attending MODATEX in Lisbon and they both graduated in Fashion Design in 2013. A project with two identities, 2ID will be presenting "Numb" at Sangue Novo.

You met while studying at MODATEX. Why did you decide to get together for this project?
Sara Seidi (SS): When we presented our graduation collections, we realized that there were some similarities, so we thought it would be a challenge for each of us to it together. We had in mind the idea of taking a risk and find out what the final result of joining two different ideas would be.
Rúben Damásio (RD): That’s exactly we called ourselves 2ID – it’s two identities, two ideas… Although there are some things in common, we still have two different personalities, two different identities.

How is it to work together? Do you work well together?
SS: We do. Above all, we must respect each other because our points of view are different. When we don’t agree on something, we must try to reach a consensus, something that we both like.
RD: The most difficult part in this project was the distance. I am taking an internship that is not in Lisbon and Sara is here and that’s maybe what caused some of the complexity. Communication is more difficult and sometimes we must trust the other to make decisions…
SS: Some decisions must me made right there! Right now communication is much easier. Facebook, Skype, mobile phones… Everything helps! We talk to each other every single day!

This collection is very inspired in sportswear…
SS: Yes! Sport chic is a very strong trend nowadays and was a huge influence both technically and visually. We started off with more basic and classic pieces and tried to give them a more contemporaneous, current and sportive look.

Was there any concept or reference for this collection?
SS: Above all, we had a very conceptual inspiration and only then we started thinking about the visual part of the collection. It’s not so much about a visual reference… it’s something more intimate. I feel like there’s a new generation of designers that don’t look for visual inspirations, they’d rather risk looking into their intimacy and interpret it to the outside world through fashion.
RD: It’s almost a reflection on what is happening in today’s society, on our generation. The concept of the collection is “numb”, which translate somehow a feeling of loss, not in a negative way… Rather as if things don’t have a defined line…

What do you expect from your participation on ModaLisboa?
SS: ModaLisboa is important because it allows us to get in touch with people from this industry. And the experience itself, the runway show, the backstage, organizing it all…
RD: For me it’s asking that question to the audience and being able to know what people think of our work.

Will you be working together in the future?
SS: It depends. It depends on what comes next. This wasn’t the beginning of a brand; it was more like a partnership, a collaboration.
RD: It was an experiment… We are exploring and looking for feedback. Only after the project can we analyze properly how it went…
SS: And what will come next…
