Preview | Sangue Novo: PPDC AW15/16

Graduated from Kensington University in 2011, Patrícia da Costa founded PPDC in 2012. Now in 2015, she will make her debut at ModaLisboa, where she will present "Collection III".

What was the starting point of this collection?
My process is always the same: a lot of research. I use mainly books on art, architecture, painting, etc. The starting point of this collection was “Things Come Apart”, a photo book by Todd McLellan. His photos are very technical, as he disassembles devices such as an iPhone or a writing machine and takes a photo of all the components.

How did you translate that into the collection?
McLellan’s photos are very linear and that is something that I can relate to because it is similar to my own aesthetics. Some of the shapes that I ended up using in the collection actually come from his photos.
The idea that all components come together to create an object is something that I have also explored, creating pieces with mortises.
Then, there are also references to classic tailoring, as far as shapes are concerned, although I design womenswear. Its sharpness and attention to detail is something that also makes sense in womenswear. Usually, my shapes are straight, but in this collection I have mixed it up a bit, as I took inspiration from Gaudí’s curvy shapes, especially in the Batlló House.

How does this collection reflect PPDC’s aesthetics?
The classic tailoring is a very strong reference and you can really see it in this collection. Then, there’s also the mix of all these different textures, the cuts, the reflexes, which is something I really enjoy.

Is there anything in this collection that stands out?
Taking into consideration my previous collections, I think that the quality of the fabrics makes a difference. Moreover, I feel that the collection stands out because of the tailoring references and techniques, such as the lapels or the vest.

How do you feel about the show?
I will be very stressed, that’s for sure! I am very happy with this collection though, and I know that all the garments are well made and they fit well. I hope people like the collection because I feel it is something different from what they usually see here; it’s a different silhouette.

Preview | Sangue Novo: BANDA AW15/16

Nós começámos a desenhar a colecção no Verão passado...

Aloísio Rodrigues and Tiago Loureiro made their first appearance at Sangue Novo in October. Now, BANDA will present Lixas-me os Discos, a collection that "takes an ironical look at the cultural conventions and their metamorphosis".

What was the starting point of this collection?
TL: This collection did not have a precise starting point. We have actually started drawing it last summer.
AR: Even before presenting the last collection, we were already designing this one…
TL: Shapes came naturally and ended up looking a bit Japanese. It was a natural process, influenced by some Japanese movies about the Second World War and the westernization of the country. The collection is, in a way, a reinterpretation of the Japanese traditional costumes. We started from that traditional basis and added more urban and sportive elements.

How did you translate that into the collection?
TL: Traditional garments in Japan have a very simple structure…
AR: But they do have some complex details.
TL: It’s the way they put a look together that is complex. We tried to use that traditional aspect and give it a more sportive approach, especially when it comes to the accessories.
AR: For example, we transformed the obi, the sash they use on their waist, into a backpack and that immediately gives it a more sportive look.
TL: We used the obi in different ways. Traditionally, it is a more ornamental item, but we found it so interesting that we decided to explore it and turn it into something useful.

Is there any connection between your previous collection and this one?
AR: As far as materials are concerned, we tried to be coherent with the last collection. We started with the impervious fabrics that we had already used in the previous collection, so we decided to maintain it. It is easy to work with and people like it. Then, regarding shapes, this collection is much more sportive…
TL: I think the point of contact here is the way we sculpture the silhouette. We like to explore the garment, to defy the limits of its construction.

Is there anything in this collection that stands out?
AR: I would say the prints mainly, and also the accessories. Besides, I think the fact that we have designed menswear is something that stands out.
TL: We wanted to include menswear because of all the hype around it right now. By including men’s clothes, we’ll also get the attention of men’s magazines.

Tânia Fonseca graduated in Fashion Design from ESAD, and is now taking a Master's degree focused on menswear. In her first presence at Sangue Novo, she will present "Tailordrop".

What was the starting point of this collection?
The first module of the Menswear master course at ESAD is focused on classic clothing. I wanted to mix it up a bit and that’s when skating came up. I started looking for more information about how it all started and found these images of men wearing suits and skating around New York City, in the 60s.

How did you translate that into the collection?
The silhouette in this collection is very classic, very inspired by those men wearing suits while skating in the city. The collection is focused on suits, but I wanted it to look more sportive, so the suits are made out of knit. Then there are urban references that I used, and details from the actual skateparks, such as the handrails.

How does this collection reflect your aesthetics?
I like to mix the classic and sportive looks, so that is something that I have also done in this collection. I usually mix them both, but it tends to look more sportive. In this collection, it happened the other way around: the basis is very classic and then I included sportive details.

Is there anything in this collection that stands out?
This collection’s silhouette is very much inspired by coats without collars, which became popular thanks to The Beatles, so it has a vintage look. As far as the materials are concerned, this is actually the first time I’ve made a collection entirely out of knits, so I tried to use different techniques and knitting stitches.

How do you feel about the show?
I’m not sure… I’m not really thinking about the future or about what will happen after the show. My goal was to create and to present my work. Then I’ll consider the feedback and see what happens. If it gives me the opportunity to work for some brand, that will be great. If it allows me to create my own brand, that will also be positive.
