Preview | Sangue Novo: BANDA AW15/16

Aloísio Rodrigues e Tiago Loureiro estrearam-se na plataforma Sangue Novo em Outubro. Na segunda participação na ModaLisboa, a BANDA apresentará Lixas-me os Discos, "um olhar irónico sobre as convenções culturais e as suas metamorfoses".

Qual foi o ponto de partida para esta colecção?

TL: Esta colecção não teve um ponto de partida concreto. Nós começámos a desenhar a colecção no Verão passado...

AR: Antes de acabarmos a anterior, já estávamos a desenhar esta...

TL: As formas foram surgindo naturalmente e acabaram por adquirir um aspecto mais próximo da indumentária japonesa. Foi um processo natural, também influenciado por filmes japoneses, sobre o período a seguir à Segunda Guerra Mundial e o processo de ocidentalização. A colecção acabou por ser uma releitura das formas da indumentária tradicional japonesa. Começámos com uma base tradicional e acrescentámos elementos desportivos e street.

Como é que esse conceito se revela na colecção?

TL: A indumentária japonesa tem uma estrutura simples...

AR: Acaba é por ter detalhes mais complexos.

TL: A montagem do look depois é que acaba por ser complexa. O que nós tentamos fazer foi conjugar esse aspecto tradicional com um lado mais desportivo, principalmente ao nível dos acessórios.

AR: Por exemplo, nós transformámos o obi, aquela faixa que se usa na cintura, numa mochila e isso dá logo um aspecto mais desportivo.

TL: Nós fizemos várias derivações do obi, que é uma peça muito interessante, mas que, tradicionalmente, tem um aspecto mais decorativo... O que nós tentámos fazer foi transformá-la numa peça utilitária.

Que relação existe entre esta colecção e a anterior?

AR: Em termos de materiais, nós tentámos aproximar esta colecção à anterior. Começámos pelos impermeáveis, que já tivemos na outra colecção, e decidimos apostar mais nesse tipo de material porque é mais fácil de trabalhar e porque o mercado nacional também o procura bastante. Em termos de formas, esta é muito mais desportiva...

TL: Eu penso que o ponto de contacto é uma espécie de escultura da silhueta. Nós gostamos de trabalhar e explorar a peça, de quase desafiar os seus limites de construção.

O que é que destacariam nesta colecção?

AR: Os estampados, principalmente, e os acessórios. Além disso, penso que o facto de desta vez termos incluído peças masculinas também se destaca nesta colecção.

TL: Nós queríamos incluir peças masculinas porque há muito hype em relação à roupa de homem. Ao incluir peças masculinas, conseguimos que haja também interesse por parte das publicações para homem.

Aloísio Rodrigues and Tiago Loureiro made their first appearance at Sangue Novo in October. Now, BANDA will present Lixas-me os Discos, a collection that "takes an ironical look at the cultural conventions and their metamorphosis".

What was the starting point of this collection?

TL: This collection did not have a precise starting point. We have actually started drawing it last summer.

AR: Even before presenting the last collection, we were already designing this one…

TL: Shapes came naturally and ended up looking a bit Japanese. It was a natural process, influenced by some Japanese movies about the Second World War and the westernization of the country. The collection is, in a way, a reinterpretation of the Japanese traditional costumes. We started from that traditional basis and added more urban and sportive elements.

How did you translate that into the collection?

TL: Traditional garments in Japan have a very simple structure…

AR: But they do have some complex details.

TL: It’s the way they put a look together that is complex. We tried to use that traditional aspect and give it a more sportive approach, especially when it comes to the accessories.

AR: For example, we transformed the obi, the sash they use on their waist, into a backpack and that immediately gives it a more sportive look.

TL: We used the obi in different ways. Traditionally, it is a more ornamental item, but we found it so interesting that we decided to explore it and turn it into something useful.

Is there any connection between your previous collection and this one?

AR: As far as materials are concerned, we tried to be coherent with the last collection. We started with the impervious fabrics that we had already used in the previous collection, so we decided to maintain it. It is easy to work with and people like it. Then, regarding shapes, this collection is much more sportive…

TL: I think the point of contact here is the way we sculpture the silhouette. We like to explore the garment, to defy the limits of its construction.

Is there anything in this collection that stands out?

AR: I would say the prints mainly, and also the accessories. Besides, I think the fact that we have designed menswear is something that stands out.

TL: We wanted to include menswear because of all the hype around it right now. By including men’s clothes, we’ll also get the attention of men’s magazines.

News | ModaLisboa Curiouser: Sangue Novo finalists

A ModaLisboa anunciou os designers que marcarão presença na próxima edição da plataforma, que decorrerá entre 13 e 15 de Março. O desfile Sangue Novo terá lugar no primeiro dia do evento e conterá com desfiles de 12 jovens criadores.

DavidCatalán, a marca que acaba de apresentar na Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, é uma das estreias desta edição. Também pela primeira vez apresentarão Tânia Fonseca, Duarte (por Ana Duarte), M HKA (por Felícia Macedo e Alexandre Pereira) e PPDC (por Patrícia Pereira da Costa).

Inês Duvale, escolhida na última edição do Sangue Novo para apresentar a sua colecção no festival holandês FASHIONCLASH, é uma das designers que transitam da edição anterior, juntamente com a dupla BANDA, formada por Tiago Loureiro e Aloísio Rodrigues.

Esta será também a segunda participação de Patrick de Pádua e de Rúben Damásio, que volta à plataforma depois de ter apresentado na edição de Março de 2014, integrado na dupla 2ID.

Cristina Real estará também de regresso, apresentando pela terceira vez consecutiva.

ModaLisboa announced the designers who will be showing at the "Sangue Novo" platform in the next edition, taking place between March 13th-15th. The "Sangue Novo" presentation will take place in the first day of the event and will be made up of 12 shows.

DavidCatalán, the brand that just presented in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, will be presenting for the first time, alongside Tânia Fonseca, Duarte (by Ana Duarte), M HKA (by Felícia Macedo and Alexandre Pereira) and PPDC (by Patrícia Pereira da Costa).

After presenting in the last edition, BANDA and Inês Duvale, the designer selected by FASHIONCLASH to show in the next edition of the festival in June, will be presenting for the second time.

Also presenting for the second time will be Patrick de Pádua and Rúben Damásio, who showed in March 2014, as part of 2ID.

Cristina Real will be presenting at Sangue Novo for the third consecutive time.

Aloísio Rodrigues e Tiago Loureiro conheceram-se em Fevereiro, quando os seus percursos profissionais se cruzaram na mesma empresa. Agora, vão apresentar "Monument", uma colecção sobre uma civilização submersa no oceano, que desperta e percorre o fundo do mar até encontrar uma praia.

De onde surgiu o nome BANDA?

TL: Primeiro, por uma questão de mercado e para aproveitarmos o facto de o Aloísio ser cabo-verdiano. Para nós, fazia sentido voltar a comunicação para África e aproveitar esta vantagem e este privilégio que temos dentro da marca. Daí termos escolhido este nome com alguma sonoridade africana. O nome resulta também das nossas brincadeiras... Quando estávamos a trabalhar, durante a hora de almoço, começávamos a cantar fados e mornas, por isso também há esse lado mais divertido que influenciou o nome.

Como surgiu a ideia de fazerem a colecção juntos?

AR: Nós estávamos em contacto com os materiais e cada um de nós ia imaginando peças.

TL: Eu tenho um hábito muito natural de fazer scrapbooks e desenhar. Como ali tínhamos um grande acesso a tecidos, íamos desenhando conforme os materiais e tentando perceber o que cada um de nós faria com ele. A partir daí íamos imaginando peças e complementado desenhos um do outro.  Até que um dia o Aloísio me disse a brincar: “Vamos fazer uma colecção para a ModaLisboa?”. Isto foi uma sexta-feira e eu fiquei com aquela ideia na cabeça o fim-de-semana todo, até que na terça-feira lhe disse que queria realmente concorrer e ele aceitou.

E como é a dinâmica entre vocês?

TL: Eu acho que não há assim muita fricção. Em termos conceptuais, quando foi para criar a colecção, houve um pouco porque...

AR: Nós discutíamos as peças, até que ponto iriam resultar ou não. A formação do Tiago é mais conceptual, enquanto que a minha foi mais técnica, então aí às vezes havia algumas diferenças.

A vossa abordagem ao processo de criação das peças é semelhante?

TL: Nós desenhamos peças diferente, não somos siameses. Eu faço muitos scrapbooks, exploro muito as peças conceptualmente. Ele é mais imediato; desenha uma peça e faz. O desafio foi precisamente conjugar estas duas abordagens e adaptar as peças à visão que tínhamos.

A descrição da vossa colecção refere que o objectivo é “reflectir sobre o imediatismo com que se processam todos os aspectos da sociedade actual, em particular, o sistema da moda, que reserva cada vez menos espaço para uma fruição saudável do design de autor”.  Que querem dizer com isto?

TL: A existência de colecções pre-fall, resort, ou de colecções cápsula é extremamente exigente para os designers. Colecções que poderiam ser absolutamente icónicas passam-nos quase ao lado... Custa olhar para algumas colecções e perceber que elas nunca vão ser apreciadas como há uns anos atrás, porque agora passa...

AR: Porque agora há uma grande necessidade de renovação.

Vocês gostavam de dar continuidade ao projecto?

AR: Tudo depende do feedback que tenhamos na ModaLisboa. Por mim, sim, tem continuidade.

TL: Para mim, é um projecto de futuro. Todas as relações que nós criámos durante a colecção e a forma como estabelecemos este projecto foram pensadas a longo prazo.

Aloísio Rodrigues and Tiago Loureiro met in February, while working for the same company. Now, they will present "Monument", a collection that narrates the story of an old civilization that wakes up from a coma and starts wandering at the bottom of the ocean until it finds a beach.

Why the name “BANDA” [Band, in English]?

TL: First of all, because of the market and the fact that Aloísio comes from Cape Verde. For us, it made sense to turn our communication for Africa and take advantage of this great privilege that we have within the brand. That’s why we chose a name that also sounded African. Then, it is also a result of our jokes and the way we acted when people would go for lunch… We would stay in the office singing traditional songs, so that also influenced the name.  

When did you decide to create the project together?

AR: We were in touch with all these fabrics and each one of us would start drawing garments.

TL: I create a lot of scrapbooks, it’s something very natural. In our company, we had access to so many fabrics that we would draw taking into account one specific material that was in front of us. We would try to imagine what each one of us would do with it and complementing each other’s drawings. Then, Aloísio started joking and told me that we should create a collection to present at ModaLisboa… This happened on a Friday, so I spent the whole weekend thinking about it! Next Tuesday, I told him that I really wanted to do it and he accepted!

What’s the dynamics between the two of you like?

TL: I thinks there’s not a lot of conflict. Conceptually, when we had to create the collection, it was difficult…

AR: Because we would discuss the garments and whether they would work out as we wanted or not. Tiago is more conceptual and I am more technical, so sometimes it was difficult.

Your design approach, is it similar?

TL: We design different pieces. We are not conjoined twins! I create a lot of scrapbooks and tend to conceptually explore garments. He is more immediate; he draws a garment and executes. The challenge for us was to join these two approaches and adapt the various pieces to our vision.

The description of your collection mentions that the goal is “to reflect about the immediacy of the current society, especially in the fashion industry, where there’s less and less time to appreciate the collections”. What do you mean by this?

TL: Nowadays, we have pre-fall, resort, capsule collections… It is extremely demanding for designers. Some collections that could be iconic sometimes don’t get any attention and are not appreciated as they would be some time ago. Everything it so fast…

AR: Because nowadays there’s great need for new things, for renovation.

Would you like to move forward with this project?

AR: It all really depends on the feedback we’ll receive after ModaLisboa. As far as I am concerned, yes, I think I would like to move forward.

TL: This is a project with prospect. All the relationships we created during this collection and the way we assembled this project were thought as a long-term project.
